Ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections next year, actor-turned-politician Khushbu Sundar today joined the BJP in the presence of newly appointed national general secretary CT Ravi and state president L Murugan after resigning from the Congress.

No impact on political matrix: Cong

  • The Congress on Monday said the exit of Khushbu Sundar would not have any impact on the state's political matrix or the next Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu noting that the actor lacked ideological commitment. Terming her exit unfortunate, Congress incharge of Tamil Nadu Dinesh Gundu Rao said the Congress would not lose focus due to this development and would focus on strengthening the state unit ahead of the elections. Accusing some leaders of "dictating terms" and "suppressing" her, Khushbu, who was earlier also with regional satrap DMK, promised to do her best to fulfill her responsibilities in the BJP and make sure it sees victory in Tamil Nadu.

Stating that the country needs someone like Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take it in the right direction, she said she would do her best at responsibilities given to her.

The BJP, which lacks a charismatic leader in Tamil Nadu and has also been wooing megastar Rajinikanth for long, is hoping to improve its presence in the elusive state with Khushbu.

So far, the saffron party has not received much traction there with its alliance with late J Jayalalithaa's AIADMK. Speculations are rife of a "key role" for her in the 2021 Assembly election and also a RS seat.

Observers say Khushbu makes "good optics" for the BJP, but to say she will make any major dent in rivals camp is "far-fetched". "Khushbu has a good fan following, but she lacks personal base, thereby making no difference to real layers like DMK," they say.
