Young guns Green, Abbott, Pucovski for India Tests

Prodigiously talented youngsters Will Pucovski and Cameroon Green were among five uncapped players included in a 17-member Australian Test squad for the four-match series against India, which starts on December 17.

The other uncapped Test players in the Tim Paine-led side are leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson, all-rounder Michael Neser and fast bowler Sean Abbott — whose bouncer had accidentally hit Phil Hughes during a Sheffield Shield game in 2014, leading to his tragic death. All the players who are yet to wear the Baggy Green have been called on the back of extraordinary performances in the domestic circuit in recent times, Cricket Australia said.

Cricket Australia's national selector Trevor Hohns said the Shield performances augur well for Australia's future.

"Two of those many standout players were of course Cameron Green and Will Pucovski," Hohns said in a statement. Each of these players, though, has represented Australia in other formats. "Cameron has already won selection in the white-ball squad and continues that in joining the Test squad. He is a wonderful young talent who has great potential to become an allrounder of substance over time. His batting alone has demanded his place in the squad," Hohns said.

Revenge series

Seeking to regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy they lost for the first time in 2018-19, Australia will also have the seasoned stars who dominated their most recent Test series, against Pakistan and New Zealand at home. That took Australia to the top of the world rankings before the Covid-19 pandemic hit.

The limited-overs leg, which will comprise three ODIs and as many T20Is, will be held prior to the Test series, starting November 27.

Sydney: A 25-player Indian squad, led by skipper Virat Kohli, reached here today for a two-month Australia tour that starts with a 14-day quarantine-cum-training period on the outskirts of the city. Oz kick Smith captaincy question down the road

The question of whether Steve Smith will regain the captaincy of the Test team continues to gnaw at Australian cricket nearly three years after the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. Australia's selectors, however, are refusing to bite. Smith's name was not even raised in discussions about the leadership roles, selectors chairman Trevor Hohns said today. Cool Kochhar holds off Chowrasia

Local lad Karandeep Kochhar carded a 69 under pressure in the fourth and final round to win the TATA Steel PGTI Players Championship at the Chandigarh Golf Club, his home turf, today. The 21-year-old, who first won on PGTI as an amateur aged 17 in 2016, ended up with a total of an 18-under 270 to win by two strokes at the Rs 30 lakh event. Kochhar, who took home a cheque of Rs 4.85 lakh, has climbed from seventh to second position on the PGTI Order of Merit, behind Pune-based Udayan Mane. Sunit Chowrasia of Kolkata broke the course record with a sensational 10-under 62 to secure the runners-up spot at a 16-under 272.

Kochhar, whose overnight lead was four strokes, kept his nerve on the final day to register his first win on PGTI in four years, having come close on several occasions. He had hoped for a good stretch over the first six holes today, and he managed to do it, collecting birdies on the first two holes to get his confidence going. He missed a couple of birdie chances before a three-putt bogey on the 10th. A good par followed on the 12th, where Kochhar two-putted from 70 feet. Standing on the 16th tee, he realised that Chowrasia had caught up with him at 16-under. Kochhar responded to the challenge, picking up timely birdies on the 16th and 17th, where he sank a 20-footer from the fringe.

"I came close to winning several times in the past and had many top-10 and top-5 finishes over the past three years. So it's a big relief to finally cross the line and that too at my home course," said Kochhar. "I got the perfect start and then had a nervy phase between the ninth and the 15th. However, I kept my calm and stuck to my task. On the 16th tee I found out Sunit's score and knew I had to make a birdie thereafter. I managed to do that and the 20-feet birdie conversion on the 17th was crucial as it gave me a two-shot cushion and helped me avoid the pressure on the last hole," he added..

Chowrasia shines

Chowrasia, who had carded 69-69-72 over the first three days, was overnight 14th and nine off the lead. But he had a blazing start today as he birdied the first three holes, followed by birdies on the eighth and ninth. Five-under after nine holes, Chowrasia had a bogey on the 10th but came roaring back with birdies on the 11th, 13th and 14th.

Another local golfer, Akshay Sharma (69), the winner at last week's PGTI event, was third at a 14-under 274. Chandigarh golfer Yuvraj Singh Sandhu (67) and Gurugram's Veer Ahlawat (70) were joint fourth at 13-under. Abhijit Singh Chadha (66) was tied-6th at 11-under and Aadil Bedi (68) ended up tied-10th at a 9-under 279. Udayan Mane (67) was tied-14th at 8-under.

Kapil back playing golf, 3 weeks after angioplasty

New Delhi, November 12

Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev, who suffered a heart attack last month, today got back on the golf course three weeks after undergoing emergency angioplasty.

The 61-year-old underwent an angioplasty last month after complaining of uneasiness and pain in the chest, following which he was rushed to a hospital late at night.

Kapil today posted a video of himself hitting a tee shot at the Delhi Golf Club, and saying that 'that's what life is all about'.

"You can't express in words what fun it is to be back on the golf course or a cricket ground. It is beautiful to be back at the golf course, having fun and playing with friends. That's what life is all about," Kapil said.

Kapil had got back home after a couple of days in hospital, and had said that he would like to be back playing golf as soon as doctors allowed him. Kapil has been a very keen amateur golfer after retiring from international cricket. — TNS

The 84th Masters began in a surreal atmosphere as starters Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player hit the ceremonial first tee shots in near darkness at Augusta National today. Nicklaus and Player emerged from the clubhouse at 6.57 am local time, the exact minute of sunrise, and strode to the tee before daylight had even punctuated the gloom in a light drizzle, as a drone buzzed nearby to film the occasion. Pucovski back after ‘mental’ issues

Will Pucovski had last year ruled himself out of contention for Test selection "due to matters pertaining to mental wellbeing". Two years ago, at age 20, Pucovski had left cricket "indefinitely" over mental health issues. His inclusion in the Test team is a triumph of human spirit and his courage. He has had a fine run in domestic cricket in recent times, striking successive double centuries in two Sheffield Shield appearances, amassing 495 runs at an average of 247.50. In all likelihood, Pucovski will partner the seasoned David Warner at the top. His inclusion sets up a competition with fellow opener Joe Burns, who is feeling the heat after a disastrous start to the First-Class summer.

Covid-19: Three national players test +ve in Punjab

Patiala, November 7

Three players of the National Centre of Excellence Scheme have tested positive for Covid-19 at the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala.

This is for the first time that players — one fencer and two judokas — at the NIS have tested positive for Covid ever since the pandemic broke out.

It learnt that the players, following the SOP, had already been undergoing quarantine for 14 days since November 1. The players who tested positive have been identified as Jyotika Dutta, Ajinkya and Pardip Gaikwad.

The players have already been shifted to a private hospital in Patiala. The district health authorities informed that all three players were asymptomatic.

UP police arrest three for duping Khelo India aspirants

New Delhi, November 6

The Uttar Pradesh police have arrested three persons, including a former kabaddi player, for fleecing grassroots-level athletes through a false advertisement for next year's Khelo India Games.

The action was taken two days after the Sports Authority of India (SAI) lodged an FIR, alleging that several athletes across the country were duped through the false advertisement, which sought money to compete in trials for the Khelo India Games.

The Khelo India Games are scheduled to be held in Panchkula next year. "The Uttar Pradesh police has arrested three persons on Friday involved in circulating a false advertisement on social media platforms inviting applications from athletes to participate in the Khelo India Games scheduled in Panchkula in Haryana in 2021, and asking athletes to pay Rs 6000 each to participate in the Games," the SAI said in a statement. — PTI

New Delhi: Gyanendro Ningombam of Manipur has been elected unopposed as the Hockey India (HI) president, taking over from Mohammad Mushtaque Ahmad, who was asked to demit office by the Sports Ministry for violating the National Sports Code's tenure guidelines. French Open: Teen Iga wins women’s title

Teenager Iga Swiatek became the first Polish player to win a Grand Slam singles title when she beat American fourth seed Sofia Kenin 6-4 6-1 in the French Open women's final today.

The unseeded 19-year-old, who did not drop a set throughout the claycourt tournament, is the youngest winner here since Monica Seles lifted the Suzanne Lenglen Cup in 1992.

"I'm so happy. I'm so happy my family was here finally. It was overwhelming for me," said world No. 54 Swiatek, the lowest-ranked player to win the women's title here since women's tour rankings were introduced in 1975. "Two years ago I won a junior Grand Slam and now I'm here. It feels like such a short time. I'm just overwhelmed."

Cricketer Dean Jones dies of cardiac arrest

Dean Jones, the former Australian batsman who became famous as a popular commentator after his cricket career, died after a cardiac arrest here today at age 59.

Jones was in Mumbai as part of the commentary team for the Indian Premier League, currently underway in the UAE. He was staying at a city hotel and was in a biosecure bubble, along with the other commentators and television crew. According to an IPL source, Jones suffered a heart attack around noon and was gone in a matter of seconds. "Deano was standing in the hotel lobby and he suddenly collapsed. Brett Lee was standing by his side. Brett tried to revive him by applying CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) but he didn't respond," said the source. He was taken to a hospital in Girgaon, where he was pronounced dead on arrival

Jones, who is survived by his wife and two daughters, played 52 Tests and 164 ODIs and was part of the Australian team that won the 1987 World Cup under Allan Border. Jones was the Man of the Match in the famous tied Test in Madras (now Chennai) in 1986, when he displayed extraordinary physical and mental strength in extremely difficult conditions to bat over eight hours in making 210, regarded as one of the greatest innings ever played, anywhere.

He was also an exciting ODI batsman who was known for his trademark shots over the field and his frenetic running between the wickets. He was a fearless batsman who often faced the fastest bowlers protected by a baggy yellow cap and pulled and hooked the ball with great success. He scored 6,068 runs at an average of 44.61 in ODI cricket and would have been quite at home in modern cricket for which he provided commentary.

Border, his inspirational captain, said today: "He revolutionised the game and I loved him. When he scored his 200 in Madras he was so dehydrated but he kept going. At 170 I said 'if you can't keep going I'll get a Queenslander on'."

A day after Messi bombshell, Barca still hoping he will stay

Barcelona haven't given up on Lionel Messi just yet. A day after the Argentine great told the club he wants to leave, Barcelona said their restructuring project still revolves around the player.

"We want to rebuild for the future together with the best player in history," Ramon Planes, the club's technical director, said today. "We are not contemplating any departure on a contractual level because we want him to stay. We have to show a huge respect for Messi."

"We can't make this a dispute between Leo Messi and Barcelona because neither deserves it," Planes said.

Barcelona are trying to avoid an abrupt ending to Messi's career at the club. His last match with a Barcelona jersey was the embarrassing 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, one of the worst defeats in the player's career and in the club's history. But Messi apparently has already made up his mind, and it seems only a matter of how ugly the termination will get.

Messi's first contract with the club was signed on a napkin after a lunch between his representatives and club officials nearly 20 years ago, but it was with a burofax — a certified communication method commonly used in Spain, similar to a telegram — that Messi told the club he wants to leave. There was no phone call or meeting with club officials. Just the burofax. In it, Messi invoked a clause in his contract that allowed him to leave for free after the end of the season.

But Barcelona said the clause mentioned by Messi expired on June 10, meaning that the player missed the deadline and would have to pay the clause of 700 million euros if he wants to leave before his contract ends in June 2021. James Anderson is far from being done after becoming the first pacer to amass 600 Test wickets and he sees no reason why he can't enter the 700-club alongside Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan even though he has hit 38. "I've chatted to Joe about this a little bit and he has said he would like me to be in Australia (for the Ashes next year)," Anderson was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. "I don't see any reason why I can't be. I'm working hard on my fitness all the time. I'm working hard on my game."

"I feel like I've still got stuff to offer this team. As long as I still feel like that I think I'll keep going. Can I reach 700? Why not?"

No trials for Thomas, Uber Cup teams due to Covid fears

New Delhi, August 26

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has decided not to hold trial matches to select the team for the Thomas and Uber Cup. Instead, the team will be decided on the basis of rankings as the BAI is unable to hold trial matches amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. A decision to this effect has already been taken as the federation doesn't want to risk the health of the players.

The men's Thomas Cup and the women's Uber Cup tournaments are pencilled to be held in Aarush, Denmark, from October 3. The Danish federation has already sent all the requisite information and documents to the BAI to process the visas.

"Most probably the team of 10 men and 10 women will be decided on the basis of rankings. It is the only available option in the current scenario," said a source in the know of the development.
