PM Modi to visit cyclone-hit Odisha, West Bengal today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit cyclone-affected Odisha and West Bengal tomorrow and hold high-level meetings with the CMs of two states to review the impact and damage caused by Yaas.

  • Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Kalaikunda IAF base on Friday to apprise him of the damage caused by Cyclone Yaas.
  • Mamata will also undetake an aerial survey of the cyclone-affected areas on Friday. She will make a brief halt at Hingalganj in Sunderbans.

Sources in the government said Modi would first hold a review meeting in Bhubaneswar and then conduct an aerial survey of Balasore, Bhadrak and Purba Medinipur. The Prime Minister will then proceed to West Bengal, where he will hold a review meeting in Kolkata.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister chaired a meeting to review the impact of Yaas. "Officials made a detailed presentation on various aspects of preparedness, assessment of damages and related matters," a senior PMO officer said.

"It was discussed that about 106 teams of the NDRF were deployed with 46 teams each in West Bengal and Odisha that rescued more than 1,000 persons and removed more than 2,500 trees/poles obstructing roads. The Army and Coast Guard also rescued marooned persons, while the Navy and the Air Force were on the alert," he said.

"Power has been restored in most of the areas," the official said.
