New Delhi, May 2

With Covid reaching smaller towns and threatening to enter villages, the government is all set to rope in final-year MBBS students and nursing course recruits for public health duties.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday chaired a meeting on human resource availability in the wake of the rising Covid cases and measures that could be taken to ease the situation. The possible steps discussed included incentivising students both professionally and economically. A government source said the National Medical Commission could delay the conduct of NEET UG and incentivise MBBS passouts studying for the entrance test to come for Covid duty.

"Services of final-year MBBS and nursing students could also be taken and all these people could be recruited preferentially for government jobs and rewarded financially." The Health Ministry could notify the new measures next week.

Several state governments, including Delhi, have extended the period of retirement of government doctors and nurses to tide over the crisis while the Army has recalled retired medical professionals to manage Covid response.

A recent report on rural health data showed significant vacancies of doctors at community health centres.
