No CAA if elected to power: Manmohan to Assam voters

On the eve of the first phase polling in Assam on Saturday, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urged the people in the state to "vote wisely" and "elect a government that will uphold constitutional and democratic principles".

In a video address, Singh, who represented Assam in the Rajya Sabha for 28 years (from 1991 to 2019) said the Congress, if elected, would not implement the Citizenship Amendment Act. "It will do its utmost to repeal the Act," he said.

"Society is being divided on the basis of religion, language and culture. Citing the Congress manifesto, Singh said the five guarantees given by the party were practical. "Five lakh youth will be provided jobs in the public sector and 25 lakh in the private sector. Every household will get up to 200 units of free electricity and every housewife a monthly allowance of Rs 2,000," Singh said asking voters for support.

  • Daily wages of tea plantation workers would be increased to Rs365, the ex-PM said, adding the workers would also get social security benefits.
