Hamirpur, October 1

Panic gripped Talasi village in Hamirpur district as the skeleton of a 21-year-old girl, who went missing in May this year, was recovered last evening from the forest near her house after 140 days.

The father of the girl had filed a complaint at the Sadar police station on May 9 and named the suspect and urged the police to interrogate him but the accused misled the police and family members of the deceased girl. The skeleton was recovered on the interrogation of the accused.

The family members alleged that the police did not take the complaint seriously and delayed the arrest. The locals blamed the police for inept handling of the case.

It was feared that the girl was raped, murdered and buried by the accused in the forest. The police only found some bones and the skull along with some clothes.

A forensic team visited the site. SP, Hamirpur, Dr Karthikeyan Gokulchandran said the accused was arrested and the DNA test of the skeleton would be conducted to verify the identity of the girl.

The accused Abhishek was produced before the court which remanded him for five-day police custody. It seems that the police have not taken any lesson from the Gudiya rape and murder case and despite women security being a priority, the police adopted lackadaisical approach in investigating the case.
