Cases below 40K first time in 3 mths

New Delhi, October 27

Barring Kerala, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Delhi, which accounted for half of the new cases in last 24 hours, the Covid pandemic is declining across India when most countries in Europe and the US are witnessing a severe second wave.

VK Paul, Member, Health, NITI Aayog, said India's new cases fell to 36,470 for the first time in three months and active cases stood at 6,25,857, the lowest in 11 weeks.

"The active cases are now merely 7.88 per cent of the total cases... This week, we will meet the states reporting higher daily new cases," said Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan.

Paul said the vaccine situation was dynamic and the world still had no single vaccine licensed for use after phase-3 trials.

Meanwhile, ICMR DG Balram Bhargava said a US study had shown the presence of the virus on particulate matter, which proved that there could be linkages between pollution and Covid mortality. — TNS
