New Delhi, August 23
Attorney General K K Venugopal has refused give his consent to initiate criminal contempt of court proceedings against actor Swara Bhasker for her alleged “derogatory and scandalous” comments against the Supreme Court over the Ayodhya verdict.
“I do not think that this is a case where the offence of scandalising the court or lowering the authority of the court would arise. I, therefore, decline consent to initiate contempt proceedings against Swara Bhasker,” Venugopal said in a letter addressed to advocate Anuj Saxena — who l had sought his consent for initiating criminal contempt proceedings against her.
Even in the Prashant Bhushan contempt of court case, the Attorney General had last week urged the top court not to sentence the activist-lawyer. Under Section 15 of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, the consent of the Attorney General or the Solicitor General is needed to initiate contempt proceedings against a person. — TNS
