The US saw a 25 per cent increase in new cases of Covid in the week ending June 21 compared to the previous seven days, with Arizona, Florida and Texas experiencing record surges in new infections.
Twenty-five US states reported more new cases last week than the previous week, including 10 states that saw weekly new infections rise more than 50 per cent, and 12 states that posted new records, according to the analysis of data from The Covid Tracking Project, a volunteer-run effort to track the outbreak.
Texas reported one of the largest rises in new cases at 24,000 for the week ending June 21, an increase of 84 per cent from the previous week. New cases in Florida rose 87 per cent last week to almost 22,000, with the state's positive test rate nearly doubling to 11 per cent. Arizona reported 17,000 new cases, a 90 per cent increase, with 20 per cent of tests coming back positive.
A Brazilian judge has ordered President Jair Bolsonaro to wear a mask in public, according to a court decision made public on Tuesday, after the right-wing populist attended political rallies in the capital without any face covering. Beijing Covid testing to enter 'fast track'
Beijing: Mass testing for Covid will soon enter a "fast track" in Beijing, a senior municipal health official said on Tuesday, suggesting that screening in the capital was about to gather pace in efforts to curb the latest outbreak. The city of more than 20 million residents reported its first case in the latest outbreak on June 11. Reuters
UK to further ease curbs
London: UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday announced July 4 as the date for a significant lifting of lockdown restrictions in the country, with cinemas, museums, bars, pubs and restaurants being allowed to open their doors to the public once again. The venues, which have been closed for at least three months, will be required to have safety measures set out under government guidance in place to be able to operate. PTI
