CBSE, ICSE cancel Class X, XII exams

New Delhi, June 25

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to cancel the remaining Class X and Class XII examinations scheduled to be conducted between July 1 and July 15 due to Covid-19 pandemic, the Centre told the Supreme Court today.

A scheme has been prepared under which Class XII students will be assessed on the basis of last three examinations or they can opt for examinations to be conducted later when things improve on the pandemic front, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told a Bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar.

The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) Board examinations also stood cancelled and internal assessment system would be followed, the top court was informed. The Solicitor General said as soon as conditions became conducive, the CBSE could conduct remaining Class XII examination for the students who opted for that.

Mehta said unlike Class XII, Class X students would not have the option of writing any examination later. However, the top court chose not to pass any order and sought further clarification from the CBSE on the option for Class XII students. It will pass an order on Friday after perusing an amended draft notification prepared by the CBSE. "The notification should indicate the scheme for internal assessment and give a timeline," the court said. — TNS
