Srinagar, June 25
Two Lashkar-e-Toiba militants were killed in a gunfight in Sopore of Baramulla district in north Kashmir on Wednesday, officials said.
The gunfight erupted early morning at Hardshiva village in Sopore when joint teams of security forces launched a search operation in the area.
"There was a specific input about militants' presence. As the area was being cordoned off, the hiding militants opened fire triggering a gunfight. In the firefight, two militants were killed," a security official said. A police spokesman said the two slain militants belonged to the Lashkar-e-Toiba. He said the militants were also given an opportunity to surrender, but they refused.
The encounter in Sopore took place at a time when the forces have intensified anti-militancy operations in south Kashmir districts. — TNS
