Chandigarh/Patiala, April 30
On a day when Sub-Inspector Harjeet Singh, whose hand was severed by some "Nihangs" at a vegetable market in Patiala earlier this month, was discharged from the PGI, Chandigarh, his son was appointed Constable in the state police.
The appointment has been made using special powers vested in the DGP in recognition of the SI's bravery.
Plastic surgeon Dr Sunil Gaba, who led the doctors' team that treated Singh, said, "The hand was successfully re-implanted. All stitches have been removed. He is able to move his reimplanted hand passively, with the help of the other hand. The active movement will start in 2-3 weeks."
DGP Dinkar Gupta personally handed over to Harjeet Singh the appointment letter of his son Arshpreet Singh at the hospital. The DGP said he was sure Arshpreet would serve the people of Punjab as "bravely and sincerely as his father".
Harjeet received a hero's welcome as he returned to his Patiala residence. Led by Patiala SSP Mandeep Sidhu, many of his colleagues followed his car in their vehicles.
Harjeet was promoted as SI in recognition of his exemplary courage during an attack by a group of Nihangs after they broke a barricade.
Singh was taken to the PGI where he underwent a surgery that lasted around eight hours. CM Captain Amarinder Singh had tweeted the surgery to "repair the severed wrist of ASI Harjeet Singh" was successful. Eleven persons were arrested after a standoff at a local gurdwara. mdash; TNS
