Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today shared a video capturing the scale of human tragedy involving migrants who have been walking back home in the absence of work opportunities amid the Covid lockdown.

"Covid will not get us, hunger will," a member of a large migrant family en route to Jhansi from Haryana's Ambala is heard telling Rahul, who shared some moments of his stopover last week along the Mathura Road to meet migrants.

Men, women and children are seen in the video enduring hunger and fatigue and urging Rahul to help them return home. "We have not received a single penny in our bank accounts. The government promised to give money but we haven't received anything," said a man flanked by a child.

Another migrant in conversation with Rahul can be heard saying that the Prime Minister could have given advance notice about the lockdown to enable the poor get home.

To a question on what the government should do to help them, all migrants demanded work opportunities in villages where they were headed. "Even if we make Rs 25 a day, we will have food on our tables. In Ambala, we were forced to stay indoors and had run out of all means of subsistence and sustenance. So we decided to walk back home," said a labourer. Rahul's documentary ends with happy faces of the migrant family, whose return home to Jhansi was arranged by the Congress.
